Background:
Elder of the two children of his parents, Katar
Singh was born on August 6, 1939 in a well-to-do
farmer's family in Sapnawat village of Ghaziabad
district of western Uttar Pradesh,India.
He
had his primary school education in his village
school, and secondary and higher secondary education
in another nearby village school. While in his village
school, he helped his father in many farm chores
and in the process he acquired a hands-on experience
in agriculture and animal husbandry. In 1957, he
moved on to Kanpur for college education. Thereafter,
he used to come home during long holidays and summer
vacation. He still maintains close contact with
his younger brother who looks after the family farm
in the village. Thanks to his family background
,he is emotionally attached with rural India , has
first hand knowledge of problems of rural people
and is committed to promoting their well beings
as a professional agricultrual economist.
